About FHA mortgage insurance
FHA loans carry two layers of mortgage insurance. The upfront MIP is 1.75% of the base loan amount, paid at closing or rolled into the loan. The annual MIP is 0.55% for most 30-year loans with less than 10% down, divided into 12 monthly payments. Unlike conventional PMI, FHA annual MIP does not automatically cancel at 80% LTV if your original down payment was less than 10%.
